Goodness | Fruits of the Spirit | Week 4

Genesis 1:31: God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

Background & Application - Throughout Genesis 1, the word “good” pops up four times (Genesis 1:10, 12, 18, 25). However, verse 31 is the only time God refers to something as “very good”.

What was different about the sixth day? God created mankind in his own image (Genesis 1:27 - So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them). God created humans in his image, then called us VERY GOOD, affirming the original intent for creation: to be a reflection of God.

Dive Deeper: What does goodness look like?

Psalm 145:9 (KJV) - The Lord is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

Psalm 145:9 (MSG) - God is good to one and all; everything he does is soaked through with grace.

Where do you see God’s goodness in your life? Throughout Psalm 145, David praises God in such a beautiful way. How to you praise God for His goodness in your life?

Luke 10 is a perfect demonstration of goodness. The “Good Samaritan” actively chose to be kind, give freely of his time and resources, with no expectation of anything in return.

The Gospel (AKA GOOD NEWS) is another perfect demonstration of goodness. Humans are flawed, we’re all sinners, yet saved from the penalty of sin and receive the gift of eternal life through the death and resurrection of the Jesus.

That’s how God gives to us. Freely and abundantly (John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life).

He takes delight in doing good for us (Deuteronomy 30:9 ESV). Since we are made in His image, we have a cool opportunity to do the same thing for others too. This week, spend time reflecting on the ways God has orchestrated goodness in your life. Then, reflect on the way you show God’s goodness to others. Maybe it opens a door to share the Good News with someone. Be intentional, be kind, and be good to people.
